Smoke Alarm Installation Perth

WA-Compliant Smoke Alarms for Homes & Investment Properties

Smoke alarm regulations in Western Australia have changed significantly in recent years. Hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms are now required in new builds, substantially renovated homes, and properties being sold or leased. IES installs, replaces and certifies smoke alarms for homeowners, landlords and property managers across the Perth metro area.

Our licensed electricians ensure your smoke alarms meet current Building Code requirements — selecting the right type, placing them correctly in hallways and bedrooms, and connecting them to your home’s power supply. We also carry out annual testing and certification for investment properties, providing written documentation for your records.

The Process

Smoke Alarm Installation & Certification

  1. Inspection & Assessment

We check your existing alarms (if any), assess the layout of your home, and determine the correct number and placement of alarms to meet current WA regulations.

  2. Supply & Installation

We supply and install hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. All alarms are wired into your home's power supply with battery backup.

  3. Testing

Every alarm is tested before we leave to confirm the interconnect circuit is working correctly — if one alarm detects smoke, all alarms sound.

  4. Compliance Certificate

We issue a certificate of compliance for the installation, which is important for insurance and required documentation when selling or leasing your property.

Common Questions

Smoke Alarm FAQs

Yes. Under the Building Regulations 2012 (WA), new homes and substantially renovated homes must have hardwired, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Properties being sold or newly leased must also comply with smoke alarm requirements. Battery-only alarms are no longer sufficient for most properties.

WA requires photoelectric smoke alarms (not ionisation type) in most residential applications. They must be hardwired to the mains power supply with a battery backup, and interconnected so all alarms sound simultaneously when one is triggered.

The number depends on your home's layout. At minimum, alarms are required in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the house, and on each storey. Our electricians will assess your home and recommend the correct placement to meet the Building Code.

Yes. Landlords have obligations under WA tenancy law to ensure smoke alarms are installed, maintained and working. We provide annual testing and certification for rental properties, with written records suitable for your property manager and insurance documentation.

A typical residential smoke alarm installation takes 1–3 hours depending on the size of the home and number of alarms required. We'll confirm the timeframe when quoting your job.
